How to Become an MCA Broker

To become a merchant cash advance broker, you set up a business, register where your state requires it, and sign agreements with funders or with a marketplace like ours that already has them. Then you find owners who need funding and send clean, complete files. The brokers who last are the ones owners trust with a second deal.

What are the steps to become an MCA broker?

  1. Form a business and get the insurance and bank account it needs.
  2. Check registration. Texas, Connecticut and Missouri register brokers; Utah and Virginia register providers, and Virginia registers brokers too. Florida, Georgia and Kansas bar broker advance fees.
  3. Sign funder or ISO agreements, or join a marketplace so one agreement reaches many funders.
  4. Learn to read bank statements the way funders do. The documents guide is a start.
  5. Build a process for disclosures. In states with disclosure laws, the provider's form has to reach the owner.

What do owners expect from a broker?

  • Every offer, not just the one that pays you best.
  • Honest answers about cost and your pay. See how we're paid.
  • No fees charged to them up front.
  • Help when an advance gets hard, not only when a renewal is due.

What should you check before your first file?

  1. Owner consent to shop the file.
  2. Every open position listed with balance and payment.
  3. Recent statements as bank PDFs.
  4. A note on anything unusual: a bad month, a lien, a new account.
  5. The state's disclosure rules checked.

What won't Afterfirst do with your files?

We won't contact your merchant around you, and we won't shop a file the owner hasn't agreed to. This is general information, not legal advice. For your contract and your state, talk to a business lawyer.

Which mistakes cost new brokers?

  • Shopping a file without the owner's consent.
  • Leaving an open position off the file.
  • Promising an approval or a price before a funder has read the file.
  • Charging the owner a fee up front, which some states ban outright.
