Card Settlement: Meaning in a Merchant Cash Advance
Card settlement is the step where money from card sales actually moves from the card networks to the business. The processor batches the day's sales, collects the funds and deposits the net amount into the business's bank account.
What does card settlement mean?
Swiping or tapping a card is authorization: the bank says the customer is good for it. Settlement happens later, usually when the day's batch closes. The processor then deposits the total, less fees and any refunds, often the next business day. Weekend sales frequently arrive together on Monday.
Why does card settlement matter to your business?
Settlement timing shapes your cash flow and how a funder's debit lines up with deposits. If the funder debits daily from your bank account and your processor settles the next day, a slow Friday and a closed Sunday can leave Monday's debit hitting before the weekend's sales arrive. Knowing your settlement pattern helps you keep a cushion on the right days.
How long does card settlement take?
- Next business day settlement is standard.
- Some processors offer same-day or instant settlement for a fee.
- Weekend and holiday sales usually land together on the next business day.
How do you read settlement deposits?
If deposits don't match the sales you remember, check the batch report. Refunds, chargebacks and fees all come out before settlement, so the deposit is almost always lower than gross sales.
How does settlement work with split processing?
On a split processing advance, the funder's share is taken at settlement, before the deposit reaches your bank. The deposit you see is already net of that share, so your bank statement understates gross sales.
Where will you see it?
On bank statements as daily processor deposits. In the processor dashboard, which shows each batch. In the merchant agreement if payments are collected through the processor.
