Variable Payment: Meaning in a Merchant Cash Advance

A variable payment on a merchant cash advance is a collection that changes with your sales, usually because the funder takes an agreed percentage of each card batch or recalculates the payment from recent deposits on a set schedule.

What does variable payment mean?

Instead of the same number every day, a variable payment moves. On a split arrangement, your card processor sends the funder its percentage of each day's batch, so a busy Saturday sends more and a slow Monday sends less. Some funders use a different approach and adjust an ACH payment periodically based on the last few weeks of deposits. Either way, the payment follows the business.

Why does variable payment matter to your business?

A variable payment fits businesses with big swings, because it eases up automatically when things slow. The trade off is less predictability, and on a split, the advance ends faster in strong months. Owners with steady sales often prefer a fixed amount they can plan around, while seasonal businesses tend to appreciate the flexibility.

What should you check?

Ask how often a recalculated payment changes, what data the funder uses to calculate it and whether there's a minimum. Those three details decide how much flexibility you really get.

Are there minimums and floors?

Some variable arrangements set a minimum payment so the funder collects something even when sales stall. Others cap the percentage. Read both, since a high minimum removes much of the flexibility that makes a variable payment attractive in the first place.

Where will you see it?

In the payment section of the contract, which describes how the amount is calculated and how often it changes. On a split, your processing statement shows the funder's share.
