Will Asking for a Reconciliation Hurt My Next MCA Offer?

Not usually, when it's handled properly. A reconciliation is a normal part of a true MCA, and a documented request tied to a real drop in sales reads far better to the next funder than bounced payments or a default.

What is an MCA reconciliation?

Most MCA contracts include a reconciliation clause, which lets your payment be adjusted to match your actual sales. If sales drop, you send recent statements and the funder recalculates what it should be collecting. The advance lasts longer, but the total you owe doesn't change.

How does the next funder read it?

Underwriters see the payment change in your statements. When there's a clear reason, like a slow season or a lost customer, and the payments kept clearing at the adjusted amount, it shows a business that communicated and kept its word. That's a positive signal. What worries funders is silence: payments bouncing without explanation or an owner who stopped responding.

When can it affect your terms?

If your sales dropped enough to need a reconciliation, your recent deposits are lower. The next offer is sized on those deposits, so it can come back smaller until sales recover. That's about your revenue, not the reconciliation itself.

How do you ask for one the right way?

  • Ask in writing, citing the reconciliation clause.
  • Send the statements the contract asks for.
  • Keep paying the current amount until the funder confirms the change.
  • Save the funder's written confirmation of the new payment.

How is a modification different?

A modification is a negotiated change outside the contract's reconciliation process, sometimes with extra fees or a longer term. It's also common, but read it carefully before signing.

When should you explain it to Afterfirst?

If you're applying for new funding after a reconciliation, tell us up front. We'll explain it to funders in plain terms so it reads as what it was.

So does a reconciliation hurt your next offer?

Reconciliation is there for a reason. Using it when sales really drop is better for everyone than stretching until payments fail.

What doesn't a reconciliation do?

It doesn't erase what you owe or lower the total. It changes the pace. If sales recover, many contracts let the payment return to the original amount, and some let the funder raise it to catch up. Read how your contract handles the recovery so there are no surprises later.

Which records should you keep?

Save the statements you sent, the funder's recalculation and its written approval. If a future funder asks, you'll have a clean story with documents behind it.

How often can you ask?

Some contracts allow reconciliation requests on a set schedule, like once a month. Check yours so you know when to ask.
