Available Balance: Meaning in a Merchant Cash Advance

The available balance is the amount in a bank account you can spend or withdraw right now. It equals the ledger balance minus any holds on recent deposits and any payments the bank has already approved that are still waiting to post.

What does available balance mean?

Your bank shows two numbers. The ledger balance is what has fully posted. The available balance subtracts anything the bank is holding back, like a check deposit that hasn't cleared or a card purchase waiting to settle. When a debit arrives, the bank checks the available balance, not the ledger one, to decide whether it clears.

Why does available balance matter to your business?

Most NSFs and overdrafts on an otherwise healthy account come from mixing up these two numbers. A large deposit on hold can make the ledger balance look fine while the available balance sits too low for the funder's debit. Watching the available balance on the mornings your biggest debits land prevents returns you didn't see coming.

Which habits keep the available balance healthy?

  • Check the available balance, not the ledger, before payroll and debit days.
  • Ask your bank how long it holds deposits of each type, especially large checks.
  • Set a low-balance alert above the size of your largest daily debit.

What do funders look at in your balance?

Underwriters usually read the daily ending balance from statements. The pattern of low days tells them how much room the account has for another payment.

Where will you see it?

In your bank's app and online banking, usually right next to the current or ledger balance. On some statements as a separate column. In daily balance alerts, if you set them up.
