Ledger Balance: Meaning in a Merchant Cash Advance

The ledger balance is the total in a bank account after every transaction that has fully posted, as of the end of the bank's processing day. It doesn't subtract deposit holds or approved card charges that haven't posted yet.

What does ledger balance mean?

Think of the ledger balance as the bank's official record at close of business. It updates once a day when the bank runs its posting. During the day, new deposits and debits change the available balance first, and the ledger catches up overnight. Monthly statements show the ledger view.

Why does ledger balance matter to your business?

Statements are what funders read, so the ledger balance is the number they see. A funder calculating your average daily balance or counting negative days uses the ending ledger balance for each date. If you run close to zero during the day but deposits land before posting, your statements can look healthier than your real-time available balance feels.

How is it different from the available balance?

  • Ledger: posted transactions only, updated at end of day.
  • Available: ledger minus holds and approved items, updated in real time.
  • Debits clear against available, but statements report ledger.

How do you use the ledger balance well?

When you prepare for a funding call, look at the ending ledger balance on your statements for the lowest days of each month. Those are the days an underwriter will ask about. If a low day came from a timing gap, like a large supplier payment clearing a day before a big deposit, say so. A short explanation tied to a real event reads far better than silence.

Where will you see it?

On monthly statements as the daily or ending balance. In online banking, sometimes labeled current balance or posted balance. In underwriting worksheets built from statements.
